Bibliography

The books listed below are helpful in understanding Asian and Islamic art in a cultural and historical context. The texts are divided into a range of geographical and thematic sections, with individual titles often appearing more than once.  Those sections dealing principally with a geographical area are further divided between History and Art

Sections include: Arabian Art, Buddhist Art, Carpets, Rugs and Textiles, Central Asia and the Silk Road, Ceramics, China, the Himalayas and Tibet, India and Pakistan, the Indian Ocean, Islamic and Asian General History, Islamic Art, Islamic Metalwork, Islamic Miniatures, Islamic Spain, Jain Art, Japan, Jewllery, Korean Art, Orientalism, the Ottoman Empire, Persia, Southeast Asia, Sri Lanka, Weapons, Arms & Armour,  and Writing & Calligraphy.

For interest, sections are also included on aspects of Christian and European Art, General Art and Literature ,, where these have a bearing on our subject matter, together with relevant literary commentaries.

Some of the literature featured here is modern.  Some, though, is ancient, and provides inspiration for other forms of art through the stories, histories and myths it contains.

Many of the narratives, artistic styles and motifs addressed by these books are itinerant, appearing at different times in different contexts and cultures, sometimes travelling by well worn paths, sometimes by routes unobserved.  The pleasure is in trying to follow them.
